NHL: John Tortorella attacks journalist over false rumors about Kevin Hayes

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Flyers coach John Tortorella criticized a reporter during his postgame news conference Wednesday night, questioning a report regarding trade hope Cutter Gauthier, Monday.

Gauthier told Flyers general manager Danny Briere that he did not want to play in Philadelphia or for the Flyers. Unable to sign Gauthier, Philadelphia traded the Boston College star to Anaheim on Monday in exchange for defenseman Jimmy Drysdale.

On Monday, a reporter for a team podcast, citing a source in the Flyers organization, said former Flyers forward Kevin Hayes “has his fingerprints all over this thing.” Hayes, a former Boston College player, now plays in St. Louis.

Tortorella denied this information after Philadelphia's 3-2 victory over Montreal on Wednesday evening.

“Is the guy who gave Kevin Hayes trouble here?” » Tortorella asked.

He replied: “Yes.”

“Are you making fun of me? Do you think Kevin Hayes would do something like that? …,” Tortorella said. “It bothers me that you would throw things like that and affect someone’s life. Kevin Hayes and I had a problem and couldn’t agree on how to play.”

“He's a good man. He's a good man. What you said will stick with him. That's what you don't understand. You'll sit there and say you have the right sources. … »

Tortorella then talked about the “stupid podcast.”

The coach praised Drysdale, who provided an assist and played well in his first game with the Flyers.

He added: “I was impressed by the way he handled himself.”
