BT apologizes for the failures that have hampered the UK’s 999 emergency calling service

(Alliance News) – BT Group PLC has “sincerely” apologized for the technical issues in restoring the initial 999 emergency call service.

The carrier, which operates the 999 phone system, said the problems were resolved by early evening.

Emergency services across the country were hit by a system failure from around 8.30am, preventing 999 calls from being connected.

Minor issues persisted after BT switched to a “backup system” around 10am, with some services reporting delays in receiving calls.

A BT spokesperson said: “We sincerely regret the distress this has caused. There was a short period during which we switched to the backup system during which calls could not be received.

“In this case, we are still able to find out who is trying to access the operator, and our managers urgently reconnect calls.

“Our rescue platform took calls most Sundays, and people were able to call 999 as normal.

“The basic 999 service was restored earlier this evening and we are no longer dependent on the backup system.

“We are monitoring the service and continue to work hard to determine the root cause and impact of this.”

A government spokesperson confirmed that the system’s problems had been fully resolved.

“There was a technical problem with the backup system,” he said: The 999 call system experienced a technical problem earlier today.

“The problem has now been resolved and the service is operating as normal, so anyone in an emergency should call 999 for assistance in the usual way.

“A thorough investigation is underway to understand the cause of this case.
