This Upcoming Arcade Racing Game Promises to Be a Throwback to the ’90s in More Ways Than One – GamingTest.com

New Star GP, from the creators of New Star Manager, is coming to Steam soon.

I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say arcade racing games are having a renaissance right now, but there are definitely some great ones to choose from, like Circuit Superstars and more recently Exo Rally Championship. That number will increase by one later this year with the release of New Star GP, a retro-style racing game set in the days of Prost, Senna and Schumacher.

New Star GP’s deceptively retro graphics caught my eye. I’d played many old-school racing games, and immediately thought of Payrus’ Indianapolis 500 (which, ironically, was considered a huge leap forward among racing games at the time). “realistic” arcades and simulators, although I don’t remember playing them as such) when I saw this new trailer. It’s bright, colorful, and fast, and Days of Thunder’s style shows that realism isn’t really the priority here.

Besides its stylish retro visuals, New Star GP will also feature cars and races from years past. Upon its early launch, the game will feature a career mode and championship mode, with 56 single-player races around the world, including Brisbane, Quebec, and Tokyo. The single-player Career mode will take players back to the 1980s and 1990s, but other decades are planned during early access, along with new cars, tracks, and track layouts, while Championship mode offers five distinct tournaments to compete in solo or in split-screen multiplayer for up to four people.

While New Star GP is clearly an arcade racing game, New Star developer — whose previous game, football simulator New Star Manager, was described to me by football analyst Rich Stanton as “pretty cool” — also promises real depth in the game: “Anyone can get behind the wheel and be successful, but those who really want to master the game will want to use tire selection and wear, component reliability, discount avoidance, fuel loading and even well-refueling strategy. Anything can happen during a race, From catastrophic component failures and dynamic weather changes to blown tires and a multi-car pileup.

Interestingly, New Star GP isn’t expected to remain in Early Access for very long: the developers estimate that it will only last two to four months, although that hasn’t been specified.

My interest in racing games has faded over the years, but I can’t wait to try New Star GP. I hope it fills a very specific void in my heart: a game where you throw yourself in and give it your all, with enough sincerity to make me feel my most efficient when I can finish a race with my tires still in contact with the track. We’ll see what happens: New Star GP doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but it should be released on Steam in a few weeks.
