The future of Animalia Zoo is uncertain, while an application for a bankruptcy order was filed in the High Court on Tuesday. The company owes more than $330,000 to former owner Normand Trahan.
The owner of Animalia Zoo tried again to get additional time to find a lawyer, but the Supreme Court judge rejected her request.
Normand Trahan’s lawyers submitted a request to issue an order declaring the company’s bankruptcy and evidence proving the company’s insolvency. Zoo Animalia has many debts and creditors. The company owes the previous owner about $330,000.
“The company owes the previous owner about $330,000, which is an unsecured debt. “We know that there are unpaid taxes of about $11,000 to the municipality of Saint-Edouard-de-Masquinong and that there are amounts owed to Revenu Québec,” explained Pierre-Louis Vincent.
A document containing approximately fifty notices of non-compliance was also submitted. This comes after an inspection conducted by the Wildlife Ministry on November 8. It is stated that exotic animals are kept outside and the winter quarters are not ready for the cold season.
Regarding the bankruptcy order, in the absence of a defense, the court will have to issue its decision soon. The zoo land could thus be returned to the previous owner and the guardian Lemieux Nolet who currently cares for the animals could obtain permission to dispose of the property and sell the animals. The future of Animalia Zoo will be known in the coming weeks.
