A petition to protect headphones in the UK

The WHO-backed Make Listening Safe campaign launched a petition to the British government and parliament in January to call for new safety standards for headphones sold in the UK.

The UK's Make Listening Safe (MLS) initiative, developed by the WHO in 2015, calls for UK headphone users to “get smart hearing safety information so they can self-manage their and their children's hearing risks”. The MLS campaign, which insists it is not about government-mandated sound levels, wants the British Parliament to change the safety standards that apply to helmets.

Standards established by the World Health Organization, last revised in March 2022, outline requirements for hearing protection in devices and systems such as personal media players and headphones (ITU/WHO H .870 v2).

This petition – https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/650365 – has two stages of action. From 10,000 signatures, the British government must respond to the MLS, while from 100,000 signatures it must consider a debate. The deadline is May 22, 2024.

Under the slogan “Love Sound, Care with Care”, MLSC UK was officially launched in the UK on November 1, 2023, targeting young people aged 10 to 40 years. It is estimated that over 10 million young people in the UK are at risk of hearing loss from exposure to loud noises.

MLSC's list of supporters includes British Academy of Audiology (BAA), British Society of Audiology (BSA), ManCAD, Tinnitus UK, RNID, Royal Opera House and many more.
