The UK, US and Australia plan to cooperate with Japan under the AUKUS defense agreement, which includes advanced capability programmes, the three countries said in a joint statement on Monday.
AUKUS, formed by the three countries in 2021, is part of efforts to counter China's growing power in the Indo-Pacific region.
Its first pillar is designed to supply Australia with nuclear-powered attack submarines. The report does not propose that Japan join this part of the treaty.
In contrast, the second pillar focuses on providing advanced capabilities and shared technologies in various areas including quantum computing, underwater, hypersonic, artificial intelligence and cyber technology.
“Recognizing Japan's strengths and close bilateral defense partnerships with the three countries, we plan to collaborate with Japan on advanced capability programs under the second pillar of AUKUS,” the British government said in a statement.
China has warned that the AUKUS agreement is dangerous and could fuel a regional arms race.
