Remarkable images of the “Ring of Fire,” a rare annular eclipse seen in America and Latin America

During an annular eclipse, the Moon is slightly farther from Earth than during a total eclipse, so its diameter appears slightly smaller than the Sun’s to our eyes – this creates this orange “ring”.

The event is also a scientific opportunity for NASA, which plans to closely study changes in temperature and the atmosphere. To enjoy it, special certified glasses must be worn, even those further away from the optimal viewing zone, so only a partial eclipse can be seen, the US space agency insisted.

The eclipse was visible just after 9:00 a.m. local time in the US state of Oregon on the Pacific coast, and crossed the US from the southwest to the south about half an hour later in the South Texas sky.

In Albuquerque (Southwestern United States), at the same time a large annual hot air balloon festival provided sensational images.

The eclipse was then observed in Mexico, then in Central America: especially in Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua. First look at the South American country of Colombia. At the Bogotá Planetarium, about a thousand people held their breath in the afternoon when the sky suddenly cleared. Then there were bursts of laughter, and tears of emotion.

The “ring of fire” associated with the Sun’s circumference lasts from a few tens of seconds to more than 5 minutes, depending on the observation location. Along with live broadcasts from New Mexico and Texas, NASA posted a video of the event on its website.
