Men’s Hockey: It’s Over in Canada

In a hotly contested match, a skewed shot sealed the fate of Team Canada. Sweden won 2-0 in the Olympic hockey tournament quarter-finals to ditch the maple leaf and advance to the semi-finals on Wednesday in Beijing.

It was Lucas Woolmark who scored the winning net. Taking advantage of a turn in the Canadian area, he fired a shot that hit the stick of defender Tyler Waterspoon. Goalkeeper Matt Tomkins (24 saves) was unable to help her and Sweden dominated less than 10 minutes before the end of the third half.

The Canadians tried everything to equalize the match, entering the enemy area in the last minutes of play, hitting the goal in an empty cage.

So Canada took sixth place in this competition. Claude Julien’s squad had the country’s second-worst result at the Olympics, previously obtained in 1980. In 2006 in Turin, Team Canada finished the tournament in seventh place.

Sweden will now face the Russian Olympic Committee, while Slovakia will face Finland in the other semi-final match.
