Get away (further) from Phoenix

The Arizona Coyotes have really tried to establish themselves in Tempe, a suburb of Phoenix. Their plan didn’t work, as we’ve learned over the past few months.

It wasn’t ideal, considering being suburban is detrimental in the NHL. # Ottawa # Kanata

The club had to find a solution. And now, the plan being evaluated by the franchise is to go beyond Phoenix, to Mesa City.

Here’s what has come out of Arizona in the last few hours.

In Google Maps, looking at the distance between Phoenix and Mesa (without taking into account a specific place, but simply the two cities), we note that a good 26 minutes are necessary, by car, to get from one city to another.

And this is without traffic.

This is where Alex Meruelo, owner of the Coyotes, submitted a letter of intent to purchase 41 acres of land to build the club’s next arena.

The arena will be built with private money only. With what money? who knows.

It is worth noting that this is not the only place where wolves are seen. Scottsdale and Phoenix are also on the radar of the Wolves, who would like to get several possibilities on the table if many options no longer work.

Failed options in Arizona? We’ve already seen that.

But the fact remains that for now, the master plan is on Misa’s side. I knew the city because the Chicago Cubs stage their training camp there…but other than that? Not many people know her.

And now the plan is to bring the NHL club in there, to make sure we keep a bad franchise in Arizona for as long as possible. During this time, in Quebec – ah and so be it.

The club’s plan is to have an answer in early 2024. From there, work could begin so that Wolves can move there for the 2026-27 season.

This is in three years.

Remember, next year, the Coyotes will be having their second year at Mullett Arena. They have a three-year agreement with an option year, which leads to the summer of 2026, to be exact.

So André Turenne will continue to live with uncertainty. After all, if the plan doesn’t work in Mesa, then what?
