A policeman saves a man from icy water with the help of his dog

A police officer showed admirable vigilance Thursday when he enlisted the help of a man's dog who found himself in the frigid waters of Lake Michigan to rescue the victim.

Michigan State Police said that one of its officers, Cameron Bennetts, was called to rescue a 65-year-old man who was walking his dog on Arbutus Lake in the town of East Bay when the ice broke under his feet.

The police officer's intervention was captured on his body camera and partly broadcast by police.

Upon arriving, the police officer stepped forward onto the ice and attempted to throw a rescue disc attached to a cable at the distressed man, to no avail. That's when Mr. Bennetts had the perfect idea to save the victim.

“Send me your dog!” Will you come to me?” we hear him shout to the distressed man, and he replies that his dog is called Ruby. “Ruby, come here,” he calls to the police officer as the animal can be seen leaving its master and running towards the police officer.

The agent then attaches the Rescue Disk to Ruby, before returning her to her master, who was able to recover her. In doing so, the police officer, with the assistance of a firefighter, was able to pull the man out onto the ice, eventually saving him.

The man spent about 16 minutes in the icy water before he was rescued. He was taken to hospital but was released the same day.
