COVID-19: An increase in new infections in the United States

The United States is seeing a significant increase in new COVID-19 infections, especially in areas where the population is less vaccinated.

In the past week, a 60% increase was observed across the country. 45 out of 50 states have seen at least a 10% increase in cases in the past week.

Of that number, public health leaders in 34 states are seeing a rise in cases to more than 50%. Of all the US states, South Dakota, Iowa and Maine saw a decrease in new infections.

The US also saw a rise in hospitalizations and deaths after weeks of declines.

This problem is partly due to a 47% drop in the number of vaccinations in the past week.

“Unfortunately, infections are observed in areas where the population is not well vaccinated,” explains Dr. Vivek Murthy.

However, among our neighbors to the south, just under half of the population is immunized.

“The epidemic is now being fueled by non-vaccinators, and this needs to be clearly understood,” says Dr. Chris Burnell.

99% of deaths in the United States are caused by people who have not been vaccinated.

“The delta variant is responsible for this doubling of the number of cases. It’s more contagious, it spreads among unvaccinated people, and it causes infections,” says Julian Kavanagh, MD, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Regarding border restrictions, the latter considers that “as we advance in the distribution of the vaccine, and as we continue to evaluate its effectiveness, we will undoubtedly achieve limited freedom of movement. Limited for unvaccinated people.”
