These municipalities that experienced divorces declined sharply in 20 years

Likewise, although there was a slight increase (4%) in splits in 2021 compared to 2020, authorities note that it is now rare to see pairs splitting. A look at the development of the annual average for the past twenty years makes it possible to realize that it continues to decline and now amounts to 27,059 divorces per year in Belgium.

In a country where four out of ten marriages still always end in divorce, Wallonia is clearly one area of ​​the country where the annual number of separations remains fairly constant. As proof, this averages about 8,261 annual separations between 2001 and 2021, and Statbel recorded 7,441 last year.

On the domestic front, however, some disparities are quite visible. At the district level, for example, it is easy to note that Aath and Bastogne are the two districts in which the annual number of separations increased between 2001 and 2021. Conversely, Thuen and surrounding areas are an exception because divorces are decreasing there from hold to another.

Along the same lines, some Walloon municipalities such as Quiévrain and Éllezelles have noticed a significant reduction in division on their lands since the beginning of the 2000s.

Finally, due to the rarity of reporting, an entity in the south of the country did not register any divorce in 2021. On the edge of the French border, this is the city of Rofroy where authorities usually record 4 divorces each year on average.
