Soccer: Australia still wants to host 2034 World Cup – International – Journal Chrétien

(Reuters) – Australian Football Confederation chief executive James Johnson said on Thursday he was exploring the possibility of hosting the men’s World Cup in 2034, even if the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) came out in favor of Saudi Arabia.

Morocco, Spain and Portugal will co-host the 2030 edition of the World Cup, International Football Confederation (FIFA) announced on Wednesday, while three matches will be held in South America to mark the tournament’s centenary.

FIFA invited countries from Asia and Oceania to submit bids for 2034, which the Saudi Arabian Football Federation promptly did.

“The entire Asian football family will unite in supporting Saudi Arabia’s important initiative,” welcomed AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.

Australia, which moved from the Oceania confederation to the Asian confederation in 2006, had already announced its intention to bid for the 2034 tournament and James Johnson said in a statement that nothing had changed.

Potential hosts have until October 31 to confirm their interest.

The 48-team 2026 World Cup is jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
