Poop bags will be distributed to climbers who want to climb Mount Everest so they can return them after their climb to try to reduce the ever-increasing waste on the world's highest peak.
Food, supplemental oxygen, a tent and poop bags are among the equipment required before tackling one of the toughest climbs, CNN reported Monday.
“The problem of human waste on Everest was very serious,” Diwas Pokhrel, first vice president of the Everest Climbers Association, told the media.
This waste has “polluted the environment of the mountain,” according to Mr. Pokhrel, who believes the problem will worsen, while Nepal issued a record 478 permits to climb the peak last year.
“Each person produces 250 grams of waste per day, and will spend two weeks at high camps preparing to set off for the summit,” estimated Jinchesh Sindurakar, of the Nepalese Mountaineering Association, in an interview with CNN.
Therefore, any mountaineer embarking on an ascent will receive two bags, each of which can be used six times. They contain chemicals that make their contents odorless.
