The Colorado Avalanche duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen took matters into their own hands to allow their team to hand the Ottawa Senators a sixth straight loss on Thursday night at Ball Arena.
Even with Jacques Martin on the bench, the Canadiens can’t win. This 6-4 setback will be painful, because for the second match in a row, the Saints squandered a lead of at least two goals.

That’s mostly due to MacKinnon, who had the first four-goal game of his career. His net to complete his seventh hat trick, on the power play in the third period, tied the game 4 to 4. Nova Scotia added more into the empty net, for a total of five points.
Rantanen, meanwhile, hit the target twice on the power play. Valery Nikushkin did his part with three assists. Defender Cale Makar welcomed his return to action, after three away matches to treat the injury, with two assists.
The Senators attempted, as evidenced by 45 shots, including 41 saved by Alexander Georgiev, but their lack of discipline cost them dearly.
The worst team in the Eastern Conference, with 22 points in 28 games, will try to slow its decline by hosting the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
