Laval’s Leila Annie Fernandez and her American partner Taylor Townsend advanced to the quarterfinals of the United States Open tennis women’s doubles with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Laval’s Leila Annie Fernandez and her American partner Taylor on Sunday. Sixth-ranked Fernandez and Townsend will face Ottawa’s Gabriella Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Rudliff, no. 16, and will face the winners of the clash between Czech Barbora Strycova and Marketa Vondrousova in the next round.
On Sunday, Fernandez and Townsend needed 61 minutes to win the first set, then just 27 minutes to win the second set.
They hit 30 winners against 15 unforced errors, while Pliskova and Vekic committed 31 unforced errors and managed just 19 winners.
Earlier this year, Fernandez and Townsend reached the finals of the French Open and Miami Open. They defeated Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani in the third round during their run at the French Open.
Routliff and Dabrowski are in their fourth match together. They launched their association at the National Bank Open in Montreal in August.
Dabrowski, 31, reached the women’s doubles semifinals at the 2021 US Open with Stefani. The latter had to retire during this match due to a knee injury.
