debt: Germaine Charon

Ossian meets the Bretons abroad. Direction Australia, with Jermaine Charon, originally from Lokweltas (56) and moving to live his dream in Australia. Germaine works on a large farm with 12,000 sheep… and it's shearing time.

Jermaine Charron, 27, from Morbihan, has lived in Australia for two years. “He mainly works on a farm…especially sheep, and the main production is wool. After returning to France with Covid-19, I returned to work. he said, “For one family farm. We work 4 people, father, son and I have another worker with me: they integrated me into the family. They invite me to all the family meals, like Christmas, for example this year, and there is a great atmosphere.”

before, “I worked on two other farms… In general, the French are well received on the farms and we are well regarded in relation to our work. I don't want to work abroad, I also want to take vacation, that's why I have a working holiday permit – PVT, which allows me to travel and work … I did the whole west coast of Australia and half the east coast and my brother joined me there… we went on holiday for three weeks. I'm going to give them some surprises, there are some great places to visit, it's mainly on the coast, and then we come from Vannes, so we love the sea, and I'm planning to go where we call. The most beautiful beach in the world.”

Why Australia?

“I did BTS in agricultural management accounting, I went to Canada eight years ago, a lot of my friends went to Australia, everyone told me “Australia is the best”. In the beginning, I was not connected, I liked. Try, in the end, people's mood is very cold, heat – Weather, even if I don't spit on Brittany, it's very gentle because I always protect my colors!”

Germaine lives an hour from Perth

It is a city located in Western Australia. There are very common modes of transportation. Then, with the surgery, I have everything I need: a vehicle is also provided, I have friends a little further away who have to drive 4 hours to get to the main city …

In the farm, I do everything that involves field cultivation, grain sowing, harvesting, in-season inputs like fertilizers and plant sanitary products. Now that the harvest is over, we start maintaining the sheep fences and slaughtering 12,000 sheep! There is about a month's worth of shearing, and sixty tons of wool to harvest. The wool goes to a large processing center here in Perth for washing.

I won't live in Australia, after all, I'm very happy here, my employers want to sponsor me, which means opening me up for permanent residency, but I'm obligated for two years. I'm on hold because I have my visa that expires in March and I need to think quickly whether I can stay for 2 years or I can leave… otherwise there are other options but it needs reflection.”

Bretons in Australia

“There are many people walking aroundWith the Breton flag – like me – we protect the colors and we say more easily that we are Breton than French, and, it (also) feels better (…) Me, I've always been a supporter of Vannes Rugby Club, I've been to a bilingual school (French-Breton) and I have a good Breton foundation – a little shout out to my mum who's a Breton teacher at Mariak School ! This is for me A little missing, but not enough to come back immediatelyCollection. I usually go back to France at least once a year… and then I have my second family here, I'm more than a worker on this farm, it's nice to feel this humanity, which isn't everywhere. “
