Biggest raise in Quebec: Mayor Lavaltry’s salary rose from $78,000 to $136,000 annually

Lavaltrie Mayor Christian Goulet saw his salary rise by 74 per cent between 2021 and 2022, the most pronounced increase among all elected officials in Quebec.

Mr. Goulet’s compensation increased from $78,644 to $136,807 in one year. This significant increase is due in particular to the increase in his salary as mayor of $24,125, or more than 50%, which was voted on by the municipal council of La Valtrie at the beginning of 2022.

“In 2020, I was earning a salary of $46,119, which is among the lowest salaries in Quebec relative to similar cities,” explains Mr. Goulet, referring to a list of people who work in health care. He considers having to vote for this catch-up himself to be “ungrateful” and expects to face a lot of criticism.

“But when I explained it to all the residents, everyone completely understood that $46,000 full-time didn’t make any sense,” he said.

Consultants also received a salary increase of approximately 30%, or $4,219 annually.

In addition to his salary as mayor, Christian Goulet saw his pay increase due to his appointment as director of the Immigrant Resource Center in Doutray, which brings him $47,884 annually.
