Air Canada flight crew and passengers had to deal with an unexpected passenger on a flight from St. Lucia to Toronto last Wednesday, as a woman gave birth to her baby in the air.
Contractions began midway through AC Rouge 1879's flight, but the young mother was lucky because she was able to rely on two doctors on board to help her deliver her baby, the Toronto Star reported.
The airline explained in an email to QMI that the flight was then diverted to Bermuda to be able to care for the mother who finally gave birth before landing.
“Upon landing, the client and the baby were received by local doctors, who were in stable condition, and were transported to a local hospital. “We know that the mother and baby are in good health,” a carrier spokesperson said.
No information was provided about the number of weeks of pregnancy that the woman had completed when she gave birth prematurely.
According to the Air Canada website, a pregnant woman has the right to travel on a flight until the thirty-sixth week of pregnancy if she is on a normal course and there is no history of premature birth.
