Avalanche: Cal Makar team record; He must wait for Artturi Lehkonen to debut

DENVER – Cal McCar scored two goals to set a new team record for goals scored by a defender in a season in the Colorado Avalanche’s 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night.

Makar’s second third-half wrist shot was his 24th of the season, overtaking Sandis Osulinch’s record set in the 1996-97 season.

It was Montreal Canadiens striker Arturi Leconen acquiring out of uniform due to issues with American immigration.

Nazim Qadri scored a goal and assisted two in the first half with four goals that set the tone for the avalanche. JT Compher, Mikko Rantanen and Kurtis MacDermid – who was celebrating his 28th birthday – also hit the mark.

Pavel Francouz stopped 29 shots for avalanche, who sits at the top of the NHL. The Denver roster is looking to claim a second President’s Cup in a row.

James van Rimsdijk, Zach McQueen and Max Wellman responded to the Flyers, who played their second game in as many nights after defeating the Blues in St. Louis.

After trailing 5-1 in the second half, the Flyers scored two goals to create some suspense, but Makar ended their hopes of a second in the match.

The avalanche defenses also set a new team mark for the number of goals scored by members of the defensive team. McDermid’s goal in the second half, which is the 54th man in defense, broke the record that has been holding since the 1992-1993 season, in Quebec Nordic time.
