SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk will launch a fully propelled satellite to the moon next year with the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, the Canadian company Geometric Energy Corporation, which will lead the lunar mission, announced Sunday.
The Calgary-based company said in a statement Sunday that the satellite, called DOGE-1, will be launched on board the SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket in the first quarter of 2022. It added that the satellite, cubic in shape and weighing 40 kilograms, will aim to obtain “Information about lunar space using onboard sensors and cameras.”
Geometric Energy Corporation said the “DOGE-1 mission to the moon” would be “the first commercial lunar payload in history to be fully paid for with Dogecoin,” without specifying the amount of the deal.
