Nine people were killed on Saturday when gunmen opened fire on their truck in Mexico, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office said, citing a conflict between landowners as the reason for the attack.
A press release stated that the truck fell into an “ambush” in Nochixtlán, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, while it was transporting residents of a nearby town, killing nine people “instantly.”
The local public prosecutor’s office added that four others – three women and a man – were injured and taken to hospital, criticizing “attacks between communities” that do not contribute to “solving problems.”
The prosecution is working to identify the attackers, according to the same source.
This is the second attack this week in the state of Oaxaca regarding ownership of agricultural land.
On Wednesday, five people – a civilian, two police officers and two municipal officials – were killed following a similar clash.
Conflict between communities over ownership of agricultural land has been a decades-long problem in Mexico, especially in indigenous areas in the south of the country.
