Contest format
The format of the Women’s World Cup undergoes a major change this edition, from 24 to 32 participating teams. This lead to the modification of the round of 16 qualification rules. In previous editions, the third best in each group could advance to the knockout stage. Teams will now only have to qualify by finishing first and second in their group.
In the event of a tie between two or more teams at the end of the group stage, several criteria will be used to choose between them. Here’s which one:
- Points obtained in all group matches (three points for a win, one point for a draw, no points for a loss).
- Goal difference in all group matches.
- The number of goals scored in all group matches.
- Points obtained during head-to-head matches between the respective teams.
African performances in the Women’s World Cup
Below is a list of the African countries that have already participated as well as their best performers:
- Nigeria: 9 participations (Quarter-finals in 1999)
- Cameroon: Two appearances (Haqq 16 in 2015 and 2019)
- Ghana: 3 appearances (group stage in 1999, 2003 and 2007)
- Equatorial Guinea : 1 appearance (2011 group stage)
- South Africa : 2 entries (group stage 2019)
- Cote d’Ivoire : 1 appearance (2015 group stage)
- The Kingdom of Morocco : Single entry (coming soon)
- Zambia: Single entry (coming soon)
Historic Nigeria trip in 1999
in 1999, Nigeria, who were then placed in Group A, won two of their three group matches (1-2 against North Korea and then 2-0 against Denmark). During the second day against the United States, the Super Falcons nevertheless suffered a real defeat (7-1). But, in second place in their group, they managed to play in the quarter-finals, and unfortunately they narrowly lost to Brazil (4-3 ab). Having reached this stage of the competition, they became the first African nation to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup. Even if they participate in all of the following releases (5 in total), they won’t be able to repeat such a performance.
In 1999 I watched Nigeria vs Brazil Women’s World Cup Quarter-Final, which made them miserable, unfortunately they lost 4-3 to Brazil. If anyone has the stats for African teams in the World Cup, that would be interesting

African performances in the 2019 World Cup
Twenty years after their impressive performance in the 1999 World Cup, the Super Falcons made a remarkable performance in the 2019 World Cup, which was held in France. Despite rough group stages (success against South Korea and then two losses against Norway and Liz Blue), the Nigerians managed to reach the round of 16. Swept by the Germans (3-0), they can be proud of the tournament despite their lackluster record at the end (3 defeats, 1 victory).
the Indomitable LionessesThey also fell to eighth place at the hands of the English (3-0), and they also got 3 points in the pool (victory over New Zealand and two defeats against Canada and the Netherlands). A relatively similar journey for Nigerian players. If the latter is going to try to do so at least during this 2023 remake, the Cameroonians will have to wait during a period next edition Because they are not on a trip to Oceania. Blame it on the failure of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.
