United Kingdom: A woman convicted of having a late-term abortion is released from prison

A Briton will be freed in June after serving more than two years in prison for having an abortion several weeks past the legal deadline. The woman in question, Carla Foster, received abortion pills while incarcerated in 2020 after she lied about the length of her pregnancy.

Carla Foster, who was then 32 to 34 weeks pregnant, attempted an abortion in May 2020 before calling for help because the woman had actually given birth. Doctors said the newborn died within 45 minutes. Carla Foster was sentenced to 28 months in prison in June.

“Free Carla Foster”

In England, Wales and Scotland, pregnant women have the right to an abortion up to the 24th week of pregnancy, 16 weeks in France. An appeals court decided to halve his sentence and release him from prison. The judge in charge of the case spoke of “a very sad case (…) which calls for mercy, not punishment”.

The case caused a stir in the United Kingdom. In particular, a demonstration took place in London in mid-June demanding an end to the criminalization of late-term abortions, with slogans such as “Free Carla Foster” or “Abortion is a health act”.
