Ecuadorean Marlon “Cheto” Vera suffered a violent knockout. to American Dominic Cruz on Saturday in San Diego for the bantamweight bout.
Vera (20-7) smashed Cruz’s nose (24-4) with a hard left kick in 2:17 of the fourth round. Cruz of San Diego fell hard to the ground near the octagonal wall and referee Herb Dean immediately intervened.
However, Cruz seemed to have the upper hand in the majority of the fight, but she was shaken several times by Vera and it was Cheto’s strength that made the difference.
Vera knocked out Cruz early in the fight, but the local favorite responded twice in the first round. Cruz continued to set the pace in the second round and threw a lot of punches.
Cruz seemed to continue pressing at the start of Game Three, particularly with leg kicks, but was thrown by Vera’s right around 1:30 in the round. Cruz recovered quickly and the rest of the tour was hotly contested.
Cruz wanted to continue in the same vein in the fourth inning, but was stopped briefly by Vera’s brutal kick just before mid-round.
Vera, who finished fifth in the division before his victory, could come close to a fight for the heavyweight championship, held by Aljamin Sterling.
Vera achieves his fourth win in a row.
Cruz sees his short streak of wins stop at two. He has won two of his four fights since returning in May 2020 after a nearly four-year hiatus. Three of his four career losses came in his last five fights.
Landwehr survives the first round and steals the show
The semi-finals of the festival were fought between the American Nate Landwer (16-4) and Ugandan David Onama (10-2).
Landwer had the upper hand in the majority decision after 15 minutes of frantic work.
The American came a hair short of being hit. Early in the first round, but he managed to weather the storm before dominating the end of the round and the vast majority of the last rounds.
In a position of strength at the start of the third round, Landwehr allowed himself to take breaks to allow Onama to stand and seize the opportunity to flex his muscles in front of a crowd that was demanding more.
Onama came close to winning by K.-O. At the end of the fight, but the time is finally up.
