Through the NHL: News from Derick Brassard and Samuel Ersson

Ottawa Senators coach D.J. Smith has confirmed that forward Derek Brassard has had surgery on his fibula and is out for his season.

Brassard was injured Thursday night against the Flyers and needed teammates’ help getting off the ice.

The 35-year-old Quebec has scored 13 goals and grabbed 10 assists in 61 games this season, his second stint with the team.

In 1,013 NHL games, with 10 different teams, he scored 215 goals and 545 points.

Smith also stated that Ottawa still hopes to see Thomas Chabot, Jacob Cicciron and Travis Hamonic back on the roster before the end of the season.

The Senators are in the middle of a playoff race in the East. The team is five points behind the Penguins and the final game, with seven games remaining. Ottawa takes on the Maple Leafs tonight.

Remember the pilots Samuel Erson

The Philadelphia Flyers urgently called up goaltender Samuel Erson on Saturday morning before their game against the Buffalo Sabers in the evening.

This call-up therefore indicates that goalkeeper Carter Hart will not be able to return to play, as Hart has a lower-body injury and has not played a game since March 25.

It was Felix Sandström who kept the Flyers’ net in the team’s last two games, against the Canadiens and against the Senators. Philadelphia had the last laugh against CH, before losing in overtime to Ottawa.

So Sandstrom will start against the Sabers since Samuel Erson was playing Friday Night in the American League, with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Erson has played 37 games in the AHL this season and 10 for the Flyers. In the AHL, he had a 2.68 goals against average and 0.904 goals against.
