The Qantas chief will retire at the end of 2024

Qantas chief Richard Goyder will retire at the end of 2024, the Australian group announced on Wednesday, its reputation tarnished by a series of scandals since the pandemic.

Mr Goyder will leave before Qantas’ annual general meeting at the end of 2024, the company said in a statement, as a gradual “renewal” of its board of directors is carried out over the next year.

“Gundas have been having an incredibly difficult time since the pandemic,” he said. “Recovery wasn’t easy, mistakes were made.”

Mr Goyder said he would not give in to calls for his resignation in September after Qantas’ reputation was damaged by allegations of illegal redundancies and the group selling thousands of tickets for already canceled flights.

The controversies led to the departure of general manager Alan Joyce, who announced on September 5 that he would take early retirement after 15 years as Qantas’ boss. He was replaced by Vanessa Hudson, the group’s former finance director.

It is also suspected that the management of the company pressured the government to prevent Qatar Airways from increasing its flights to Australia.
