Businessman Pierre-Carl Pelado will acquire the François-Xavier-Garneau House, a residence that once belonged to one of the most famous historians in Quebec history.

The Victorian dwelling sold for $515,000 plus furniture.

The owner of this heritage-listed building for 25 years, champion cyclist and businessman Louis Garneau put the home up for sale on May 8.

Worried about the future of the latter having difficulty closing his eyes, he is now glad to see that this piece of the collective heritage will be in safe hands.

“It’s really good news and the summer is starting off really well. It’s like a dream to see someone as passionate as me take over this house,” says Louis Garneau.

And he adds: “I am very happy because it is Pierre Carle, a great lover of culture and history and a very patriotic person at the same time.”

Possible opening to the public

According to him and to the delight of many, the house will also be open to the public at select times of the year.

Due to the costs associated with maintaining and opening it to the public, Mr. Garneau determines that he cannot sell the property to a first comer and that he wants to find a buyer who knows how to take care of it. Same passion as he has since 1998.

“Not everyone can buy a house like this. There are people who have money, but they don’t have a passion for culture, history and heritage. Fortunately, that is not the case with Pierre Carle,” he teases.

Louis Garneau would also like the delivery to take place on June 24, on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, so that everything is more important. This will depend on when approval is given from the Ministry of Culture and Communications.

Historical monument

Even today, this house built in 1864 still has its old charm, because it has always been maintained and treated with care by successive owners.

Virtually nothing has changed since its inception. For example, the original woodwork is still intact, as is a rich library of one hundred books, all of invaluable value.

Pierre-Carl Pelado would continue this line, having agreed to buy all the furniture there. So the house, which boasts a past full of stories, will be able to continue to testify to the bourgeoisie that prevailed at the time when François-Xavier Garneau lived there.
