The future Nissan Juke and Qashqai will be electric

Nissan has agreed to continue making its electric cars in the UK. To do this, the Japanese manufacturer will build its “industrial hub” in Sunderland.

After months of negotiations, Nissan agreed to continue British production. The old factory for electric leaf and thermal crossovers will continue to operate for the foreseeable future.

Given the brand’s upcoming results, the future of the Sunderland factory is indeed in doubt. But ultimately, the EV36Zero complex will become an electric future.

The Japanese manufacturer will produce the Juke and Qashqai with electric motors there, as well as the third-generation Nissan Leaf. The latter will have a sequel in the form of a crossover.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt participated in the discussion. Among these, Nissan made its agreement conditional on a significant funding guarantee from the government.

A factory with its own electricity network

To launch this new phase of its plan, Nissan will invest three billion pounds. Of this amount, £1.12 billion will be used for UK operations alone.

The Sunderland factory will depend on its dedicated electricity network. It will integrate Nissan’s wind and solar farms and will provide 100% renewable energy to the company and its close partners.

The brand has already announced that it will only produce electric cars in the future. Sales of thermal engine cars will continue till 2030. It’s around this time that the Sunderland factory should be working on electric SUVs and crossovers.

The £1bn Nissan will receive will be part of a wider government funding programme. In total, the British government will invest £4.5 billion “Strategic Manufacturing Sectors”. With environmental change, the automobile will obviously be a part of it.
