Barbados made superstar Rihanna one of its national heroes, as soon as on Tuesday she became the world’s last born republic.

Barbados has already been independent from the United Kingdom since 1966, and the easternmost island of Barbados, 300 kilometers from Venezuela, celebrates its transition to a republic after nearly four centuries of British sovereignty.

“Rihanna has made the whole world her dream through her pursuit of excellence, her creativity, her discipline and above all her exceptional commitment to her country,” said Barbados Prime Minister Mia Motley. Marking the official ceremony during which the new president was elected in October, Sandra Mason was sworn in.
“On behalf of a grateful country, and an even prouder people, we bring you the person who has been designated National Champion for Barbados, Ambassador Robin Rihanna Fenty,” Motley continued to invite the R&B singer to join her.

Cricketer Garfield Sobers, the only other national hero of Barbados alive, gave a hug to Rihanna who, like most of the participants, was wearing a black mask over her face. The prime minister said his new title would be given to him on Wednesday.
“I hope you will continue to shine like diamonds and cover your country with honor with your words and actions,” she said again, hinting at one of the singer’s greatest songs, “Diamonds” (2012).

Rihanna meteoricly entered the international music scene in 2003. Her success catapulted her into a huge empire in the fashion and beauty industries, and her entrepreneurial talent propelled her to the rich star.
Her earnings now outpace those of stars like Madonna and Beyoncé.
Forbes announced in August that she weighed in at $1.7 billion, making her one of the richest musicians on the planet. About 1.4 billion of his fortune according to the magazine comes from his makeup brand, Fenty Beauty, which was created in partnership with French luxury giant LVMH.

The ceremony was held in the presence of Prince Charles, who acknowledged the “appalling atrocities of slavery” that the island suffered during British colonialism. The ceremony was not open to the public, but the curfew linked to the pandemic was suspended so that residents could enjoy the festivities.
