The start of Donald Trump's impeachment trial has been postponed indefinitely pending a decision on the former US president's immunity.
Donald Trump's impeachment trial for attempting to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election was initially scheduled to take place on March 4.
A postponement was granted to Mr. Trump's team as prosecutors await a decision from an appeals court on the former president's immunity.
“I never thought I would hear that in a democratic country.”
This decision could greatly affect the foundations of democracy, but does someone who was president from 2016 to 2020 have a real chance of obtaining immunity? Political analyst Luc Lavoie doubts this.
“It requires an incredible level of immunity,” he says.
The analyst explains that Mr. Trump's lawyer would be willing to consider granting the former president full immunity even if he assassinated his opponent.
“I never thought I would hear that in a democratic country,” Mr. Lavoie was surprised.
In any case, whatever the decision, “it is a controversy that will last long enough to allow him to campaign,” asserts Mr. Lavoie. This is what he wanted.”
The real estate mogul had repeatedly claimed that the 2020 elections were “stolen” from him.
A demonstration organized on January 6, 2021 led to the storming of the Capitol building by supporters and defenders of the slogan “Make America Great Again.”
The date for the start of the trial will be determined upon the issuance of the Court of Appeal decision.
