Jacques Martin will now help appoint his successor.
During his review of the season finale on Thursday, the man named interim coach indicated he would provide assistance to team president and general manager Steve Stause in searching for his replacement as an advisor.
“I'll give my opinion, but it's up to Steve Stause to decide what kind of coach he wants for the team,” Martin said. I hope the players have learned and can carry this experience into next season. »
Martin began his second stint with the Senators on December 7 as a consultant, but only 12 days later he returned to leading the team following the firing of DJ Smith. At that point, the senator scored 11-15.
The interim coach continued with a 26-26-4 record for the rest of the season. The Senators finished 14th in the East with 78 points, two ahead of the Montreal Canadiens. They missed the playoffs for the seventh straight season.
In two stints behind the Senators' bench, Martin recorded 367 wins, 361 regulation losses, 24 overtime losses, and 96 ties. He spent an initial stint with the team from 1996-2004 before returning for the 2023-2024 season.
At 71, Martin also managed the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, and Florida Panthers.
