1 year agoany Last January, owners of wood-burning stoves and fireplaces were required to register their devices with Quebec City, using an online form. We therefore want to better control the emissions of fine pollutant particles resulting from wood heating.

The municipality does not have an accurate picture of how many wood heaters are on its territory, and hopes that through this mandatory registration campaign, it will be able to take a more accurate inventory, the deputy chief noted in November. The committee responsible for the file, Marie-José Asselin.

25,000 devices

It is estimated that there are approximately 25,000 devices in Quebec. Of this number, between 2,500 and 8,500 stoves are unlicensed. From 2026, their use will be banned.

Of the 1,522 appliances declared, according to city numbers, most are wood-burning stoves (586) or fireplaces equipped with a built-in appliance (543). Followed by stone fireplaces made of brick or stone (257).

Owners advertising their devices must indicate which category they fall into. “Useful information for identifying devices is available online,” notes city spokesman Jean-Pascal Lavoie. If the request is completed, a response will be made within 5 business days.

In case of doubt, citizens can call 311 and information will be sent to them via email. “After the announcement, citizens who do not know which category their devices fall into and who have not called 311 will be contacted by the city to determine what type of device they have,” Mr. Lavoie added.

Every owner who owns a solid fuel device must declare this to ville.quebec.qc.ca/stove By 1any April 2024.

The appliances in question are those that burn wood, wood pellets, charcoal, or any other fuel other than gaseous or liquid.
