“Society’s attitude towards animals has evolved in recent years, leading to the legal recognition of animals as sentient beings in civil law in 2015”, recalls the ‘Le guide de l’animal in town’, drawn up by the municipality. A more attentive ear is given to their needs. The city of Illkirch-Grafenstaden soon took up the matter, and a delegated municipal councilor was appointed, responsible for the animal’s condition: it was Sandra Didelotte.

Without a leash and without a struggle

Like Canada, many French cities have set up designated fun or free areas for dogs. Strasbourg has scores! Objectives: To improve the welfare of the animal by giving it the opportunity to exercise itself as it pleases, without restrictions and without conflict with other users. At the same time, create a meeting and friendliness space for teachers.

There are two such sites, fenced and lawn, of 500 square metres, in Ślllkirch-Graffenstaden: one built in December 2022 in Lixenbuhl, the other near the Rhône-Rhine Canal and Clestra opened on Saturday 10 June.

The municipality would like to gradually develop the system, possibly in parks or green spaces, in designated areas. Sandra Didelott will eventually see one per county, a dozen in total. Trees, benches, water points… There is no shortage of ideas to develop. But “animal and plant droppings do not mix. Technical solutions must be found “, confirms Fabian Schoch, Head of the Living Environment Department. As for water, it is the prerogative of Eurometropolis, recalls the mayor, Thibaud Phillips.

“It’s really good for big dogs…”

Few masters dared to brave the ambient heat by going out with their dog on June 10th. However, those present appreciated the new concept: “It’s really good for big dogs… These animals are more loyal and lovable than people! They need freedom from time to time, and this has to be taken into account… They will be less aggressive. And then , they will communicate with their peers, whom they will meet on Earth … “

The ACIG Association of Dogs in Illkirch-Graffenstaden presented a “learned” dog capable of moving forward and backward, turning and standing on command, finding among dozens of objects arranged in a field that smelled like its master… One of the handlers of the Illkirch-Graffenstaden Dog Brigade also made a presentation with female dog.
