New concept in Vieux-Palais d’Amos: L’Espace bleu

During a press conference on May 25, MNA for Abitibi-Ouest, Suzanne Blais, officially revealed the new architectural concept for the Espace bleu de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue, which is being constructed in Vieux-Palais d’Amos. This historic building renovation project benefits from significant funding and is implemented in collaboration with the Museum of Civilization and regional cultural organisations.

The concept, designed by a team of architects and engineers under the direction of the Société québécoise des Infrastructure, will showcase the Beaux-Arts architecture of Vieux-Palais with the addition of an extension that will reflect the region’s mineral wealth. Espace bleu de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue will offer exhibition rooms and a multifunctional room highlighting the former courtroom, as well as a restaurant area showcasing local culinary products.

The main construction site will begin in the fall of 2023. This project demonstrates the Quebec government’s commitment to providing dynamic cultural spaces that will benefit all citizens and future generations, MP Suzanne Bliss mentioned in our interview.

Why Blue Spaces?

Speaking with Maude Guy, a professional in the General Department of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, we understand that the goal of Espaces bleus is to create accessible places in every region of Quebec where people can discover and learn about local culture as well as Quebec culture in general. Blue Spaces are not traditional museums, but cultural centers open to the population. The choice of blue is associated with the fleur-de-lis, the symbol of Quebec, as well as the presence of water in the territory. Blue Spaces highlight the region and regional identity and offer an immersive experience that excites the emotions of visitors. They will also make use of digital resources and present temporary exhibitions on tour across the Espaces Bleus network.
