Hundreds of people have been evacuated due to flooding in northeastern Australia

The state of Queensland has been battered by strong winds and heavy rain since the tropical cyclone, and Australian military helicopters have been sent to rescue flooded people.

At least 200 people were evacuated by rescue teams from Sunday to Monday, according to police, and more rain is expected during the day on Monday.

Nine people, including a seven-year-old patient, took shelter on the roof of a hospital in Wujal Wujal, a predominantly tribal village on the northeastern tip of the island continent.

“We know these people are in a desperate situation,” said local official Kiley Hounslow.

Ms Kile said the village of 300 people was now a “sea of ​​dirty water and mud”.

Crocodiles, driven back by floods, are also seen in Wujal Wujal and many surrounding towns.

Cairns, a city of 150,000 people, was almost surrounded by water, which poured onto major highways leading to this important tourist hub near the Great Barrier Reef and submerged its airport.

“This level of rainfall is unprecedented,” Queensland Premier Steven Miles told reporters on Monday.

“We sent every boat we could find to Cairns to evacuate those who couldn’t make it,” he added.
