Crossing Australia by Train: What to Do?

Crossing Australia by Train: What to Do?

Whether you are an expat, a backpacker or just passing through, crossing this great continent by train is an extraordinary experience. But is it really for you? We are Tested the Indian Pacific region, from Sydney to Perth. We tell you everything.

If train travel in Australia is for you…

You have time. In fact, it’s much faster (and sometimes cheaper) to fly from Sydney and land in Perth a few hours later. But here, the journey is as interesting as the destination. It’s watching the amazing landscapes pass by your window, lulling you to the regular hum of the engine, relaxing at the bar or taking advantage of the excursions offered along the route.

do you have money Count on several thousand dollars for Sydney-Perth in a “Gold Single” cabin (eco class). All meals are included, as well as drinks and excursions. You love trains. This trip is essential for you. What could be more romantic than traveling through the remarkable landscapes of the Australian outback on an old railway built by settlers? The convoy (almost a kilometer long!) traverses the desolate Nullarbor plains for about 500 km, the longest railway in the world. For four days and three nights, you can enjoy the lush blue mountains and the red and dry lands of the bush. Undoubtedly, this trip is famous for all ferroviphiles.

Do you like luxury travel? The very old interior has something that attracts you. Wooden doors, soft old benches, impeccable service. Each day you will be offered a menu with several dishes to choose from, as well as an Australian and European wine list. The food here is absolutely delicious. You will be seated in a restaurant at tables of four. A chance to chat with other travelers, their average age is around 65! The lounge and its bar provide a meeting place, open at all hours. Train in Australia, to avoid…

Want to take your time and visit. Excursions by train can be frustrating. You will be in a group and will be restricted to schedules. You also won’t see the south coast of Australia (which offers amazing places like Esperance), as the convoy heads further north, into the outback. If you want to explore the south coast and enjoy the ocean at your own pace, this trip is not for you.

You are claustrophobic. Who says train, says forbidden places. The standalone ‘Gold’ cabin is quite small, though smartly appointed. During the day, you will benefit from a comfortable armchair and a desk and a small sink with toiletries. In the evening, a team member will come and make your bed, which will be pulled out from the wall. The cabin is very comfortable and gives you the privacy you need, but don’t expect to be able to do your yoga there. Corridors are even narrower and difficult to pass in pairs!
