Xhekaj was already enjoying a long, hard presence on the ice when Barbashev challenged him to a one-on-one brawl. Xhekaj took the brunt of the impact before hitting his left shoulder. Xhekaj got up to finish his appearance before leaving directly towards his team’s locker room.
Officially, the Canadiens announced that Xhekaj left the game with an upper-body injury. Coach Martin St. Louis did not comment on the matter after his team’s defeat.
After the match, coach Martin St. Louis did not provide any update on his defender’s health. According to our colleague Patrick Friolet, his condition will be re-evaluated on Friday to determine if he will be able to accompany his teammates to Boston, for Saturday’s duel against the Bruins.

The Habs are already missing veteran David Savard on defense, and most recently Jordan Harris.
