Maniema: More than 217,600 children are expected to be vaccinated against measles

On Monday, June 20, the Maniema Provincial Government from Kampen Health District launched a measles vaccination campaign across the province.

In an interview this Tuesday, June 21, the provincial health minister, Kikonji Matanga, said this campaign will last 5 days.

It targets more than 217,000 children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years.

“We launched the measles response campaign in Maniema province, and this campaign addressed 5 health districts under WHO and 1 health district with UNICEF support. These are health districts in Kindu, Campini Kunda, Samba, Kabambar and Banje,” said Dr. Kikonji.

Authorities relied on statistics from 2021, when 6,408 measles cases were recorded, including 157 deaths. The mortality rate is 2.5%. “That is why the national government along with its partner, UNICEF, has come forward with the World Health Organization to help the county so that we can respond in the health areas where there are a lot of cases,” he explains.

Dr Kikungi Mutanga urges parents to vaccinate their children at health centres.

According to the doctor, 217667 children are targeted in these six health districts.
