Xi says China will "never give up the use of force" to reunify Taiwan

Xi says China will “never give up the use of force” to reunify Taiwan

President Xi Jinping stressed Sunday that China will seek the peaceful reunification of Taiwan but “never give up the use of force” if necessary, during a speech at the Communist Party Congress in Beijing.

“We will work with the greatest sincerity and the greatest efforts for the peaceful reunification (of Taiwan), but we will not give up the use of force and reserve the possibility to take all necessary measures,” he said.

Beijing considers Taiwan an inalienable part of its territory and regularly reaffirms its intention to reunify the island.

“The solution to the Taiwan issue is the work of the Chinese people themselves, and it should be solved by the Chinese people alone,” Xi Jinping said on Sunday.

He added that “the reunification of the homeland must and will be achieved,” denouncing any “separatism and external interference” in this regard.

Xi Jinping also praised Hong Kong’s transition “from chaos to governance” since the imposition of a national security law in 2020 that cut off dissenting voices in the territory.

“The situation in Hong Kong has achieved a major shift from chaos to governance,” he said.
