United States: Police kill a motorist after his car crashed into the Chinese consulate

San Francisco police announced Monday that they shot and killed a man whose car violently drove into the Chinese consulate in the city.

A consulate spokesman said in a statement that the suspect “violently rushed into the administration hall of our consulate, seriously threatening the lives of teams and people on site and causing severe damage” to the building.

He continued, “The police were able to control the suspect,” denouncing this “violent attack” and calling for an investigation to be opened.

“Officers…made contact with the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” San Francisco Police Sergeant Katherine Winters told reporters.

She added that the victim was declared dead in the hospital despite the efforts of the police and emergency services at the site, without being able to provide information about his identity.

Pictures posted on social media, whose authenticity was unable to be verified by Agence France-Presse, show a car inside the building and policemen pointing their weapons at the driver’s door, while people flee.

The investigation by the San Francisco Police and State Department is ongoing, according to Ms. Winters.

Many residents of Chinese descent, many from Taiwan, consider San Francisco their home.
