We often hear that it is important to consume as much fiber as possible. And this is not for nothing! Fiber is essential for gut health, and incorporating fiber into your diet will not only improve digestion and control your weight, but also reduce your risk of certain diseases. As reported by Top Santé, fiber helps protect us from cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.

Benefits confirmed by a new scientific study published in the magazine Nutrients, where researchers reported the health benefits of insoluble fiber. If the main function of the latter is to increase stool volume and facilitate intestinal transit, thus preventing constipation and inflammation, they are also loaded with unique bioactive compounds with beneficial effects for health.
“Our research suggests that we need to ensure that other valuable components of plant sources containing fiber – bioactive substances – are also recognized as providing valuable benefits to human health.”he explains Joan Slavinco-author of this study and a professor at the University of Minnesota.

Fiber, the healthy ally of our ancestors

The researchers explained in their report that our ancestors could consume up to 100 grams of fiber per day, and thus they were able to protect themselves from certain diseases and not gain weight. Fiber allows them to store protective antioxidant compounds from the flavonoid family. This type of polyphenol is known to help slow cell aging and improve cognitive health.
“The results of this research may represent a paradigm shift in how the food and health industries, as well as consumers, view insoluble dietary fiber and bioactive substances.”, relates the study’s lead author, Madeleine Timm. And to add: “Continued research and inclusion of bioactive substances in foods and nutritional supplements can have a real impact on human health.”.
