Georgia is one of the US states that allows Republican, Democratic, or independent voters to participate in the primary elections of their choice. So we must take this factor into account when analyzing the votes that went to Nikki Haley on Tuesday evening during the Republican primary in this key state. But the fact remains that the vote tally of the former South Carolina governor, who ended her campaign last week, is likely to worry Donald Trump.
After 95% of the votes were counted, Haley received more than 71,000 votes. How many of those votes were cast by Republicans or independents who might stay home next November or support Joe Biden rather than vote for Trump? That's the $64,000 question. But there is one undeniable fact: Biden beat Trump by less than 12,000 votes in 2020 in Georgia.
Three other states held elections on Tuesday: Mississippi, Hawaii and Washington. Biden has reached the required number of delegates to officially become his party's presidential nominee. Trump could do the same later in the evening.
