The Canadians agree with Alex Newhawk for the next four seasons

The Montreal Canadiens agreed on their new acquisition, forward Alex Newhawk, to terms on a four-year contract.

The news, reported by Sportsnet’s Elliott Friedman, was confirmed by the Habs on Tuesday morning. Newhook will earn $2.9 million annually.

Remember, Newhook was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche, by the Habs, on the sidelines of the last NHL draft, in exchange for picks 31 and 37 as well as Gianni Fairbrother.

In the Avalanche’s first round in 2019, he was unable to establish himself offensively with Denver in his first two pro seasons, scoring 33 points in 71 games in 2021-2022, then 30 in 82 games last season.

On Twitter, Newhook stated that he is very satisfied with his new agreement with the Canadian.

“I can’t wait to get to Montreal. I love playing at the Bell Center and I can’t wait to be on the other side this time.”

Versatile player

After making the acquisition, the Canadian’s general manager – also a former Newhook agent – was optimistic about the 22-year-old striker’s potential.

“I wouldn’t say he hasn’t reached his potential yet. Every young player takes time to develop. We just have to look at a player like Chandler Stevenson, he’s been a huge contributor to Vegas but when we look at his history and his age, we see that it took him a long time to get to a level of play.” NHL. It’s hard to do when you get to an experienced team where there aren’t a lot of chairs available,” he told the Nashville-based media.

“I don’t want to describe him but he’s a versatile player. He brings a lot of speed to our squad and he’s not big but he’s heavy. He can play on the wing and complement one of the first two lines or be our second or third. She still has to be defined but she has the potential to do more.” [que ce qu’il a fait au Colorado].

Newhook’s contract is also reminiscent of the agreement Kirby Dach signed with the Habs after acquiring him during the 2022 draft in Montreal. The great right quarterback also had a four-year contract with the Canadiens, at a salary slightly higher than Newhook’s, or $3.3625 million annually.
