Preventable cancers, their 5-year consequences, screening targets, and survival rate: let’s take stock of the data published on the occasion of the first observational panel of the 10-year strategy for cancer control 2021-2030.

Every year in France, 382,000 patients learn they have cancer: that’s 1,000 new cases a day.

Launched in February 2021, the Ten-Year Cancer Strategy 2021-2030 aims to reduce the burden of this disease. Nearly two years after its release, the latter deserved a progress report. What are the stated goals?

  • Reducing the number of preventable cancers by about 60,000 annuallyBy 2040. That is “Today, nearly half of all cancers can be prevented each year”, reports the National Cancer Institute (INCa), in particular by working on risk factors associated with the hygiene of life. To date, it is estimated that 41 tumors (pulmonary, colorectal, liver, etc.) can be avoided. Protect yourself as much as possible – For example, by reducing your consumption of alcohol, tobacco and processed foods rich in fast sugars and bad fats, but also by engaging in regular physical activity and limiting your exposure as much as possible to substances and pollutants in the air;
  • Run a million shows More by 2025: Today, nearly 9 million screenings are performed annually for colorectal, breast, uterine and skin tumours, against which high-risk patients can take a course of screening;
  • Reducing the proportion of patients with complications from two-thirds to one-third. Five years after diagnosis, 63.5% of patients had sleep disturbances, fatigue, chronic pain, depressive symptoms, sexual desire, or motor and/or visual disturbances;
  • Improving the survival rate of cancers with a worse prognosisAnd, in a big way, for 2030. Cancers involved? pleura mesothelioma, acute myeloid leukemia, as well as tumors of the pancreas, esophagus, liver, lung, gallbladder, bile ducts, central nervous system, and stomach. The most pessimistic prognoses are mainly associated with cancers caused by the consumption of tobacco and alcohol. Note that in 2016, “Seven cancer sites had a 5-year survival rate of less than 33%.INCa continues;
  • Pumping 1.74 billion euros of financing over the period 2021-2025i.e. + 20% compared to the third anti-cancer plan 2014-2019.

To achieve these goals, the following are the four main areas included in the 10-year strategy for cancer control:

  • improved prevention;
  • reducing consequences and improving quality of life;
  • fighting cancer with a poor prognosis;
  • Make sure progress benefits everyone.
