A police officer, who has since been fired, is facing criminal charges after shooting a teenager who was eating a burger in his car, according to WOAI-TV.

The San Antonio, Texas Police Department released body camera footage of the incident on October 2.

At about 10:45 p.m. that day, a police officer, identified as James Brenand, was called to a McDonald’s, due to a “turmoil.”

While talking to witnesses about this “upheaval,” he would have noticed a car that had evaded him the day before during a roadside search. Mr. Brenand believes the car has been stolen.

Four other policemen arrived as reinforcements. The policeman allegedly opened one of the car doors and ordered the person to get off. That person happens to be 17-year-old Eric Canto, who was eating a burger, according to body cam photography.

The teenager then set the car in reverse while the driver’s side door was still open, injuring James Brenand in the process.

At the time, Mr. Brenand allegedly shot Eric Canto’s car.

Officers reportedly found Canto’s car a block away, but neither he nor the 17-year-old passenger were inside.

The teenager was initially charged with escaping by car and violent assault. However, Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzalez announced that he would drop the charges against Kanto.

According to WOAI-TV, Brenand was arrested on Tuesday 11 October. He was charged with aggravated assault, and released on bail on October 12.
