MONTREAL – Rommel Coyoto scored the two goals for his side, but Montreal lost two in a 2-2 draw with Inter Miami on Saturday at Saputo Stadium.

Quioto scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season, but a goal scored in the final quarter of the hour prevented the Montreal team from overtaking New York City FC to finish second in the Eastern Conference.

FC Montreal (12-8-4) missed some scoring opportunities during this confrontation, which at times looked like a game of chess. However, Wilfried Nancy’s men are unbeaten in their last five matches (3-0-2).

It was Emerson Rodriguez who came to break the hearts of the Montrealans by moving the ropes in the 79th minute. Gonzalo Higuain also scored the goal for Inter Miami (8-10-6), who was visiting Saputo Stadium for the first time in its history.

Inter Miami CF had previously visited CF Montreal for two games held in Harrison, New Jersey in 2021.

Defender Zachary Braault Gillard was left out of the Montreal squad with an ankle injury. Defender Joel Waterman will be suspended for the next match due to the accumulation of yellow cards.

The Bleu-blanc-noir team will resume work next Saturday with a visit to the Houston Dynamo.

tragic end

The two teams studied each other for a few minutes before going for the first attacking blasts of the match.

In the fifth minute, Samuel Peet put a superb cross into the penalty area as Quioto distanced himself from an opponent. Honduras kicked the ball with his left foot to cheat Drake Callender’s vigilance and open the scoring.

Inter Miami CF only took a minute to respond. Bryce Duke passed to Alejandro Pozuelo, who quickly found Higuain behind the Montreal defence. The Argentina international had no trouble throwing the ball at James Pantimes.

The Bleu-blanc-noir door was opened in the 19th minute, after another quality cross from Piette. In an attempt to prevent Mason Toye from rerouting the ball into the net, Christopher McPhee accidentally touched the skin with his left arm. The video assistant referee confirmed the violation and gave a penalty kick to the home team.

Pinned to the penalty, Quioto fired a low shot that passed under Callender even though the latter had jumped to the right side, to his left.

Just four minutes later, Higuain gave CF Montreal fans some panic after successfully breaking up with Joel Waterman. But his powerful right-footed shot went inches over the bar.

Wilfried Nancy’s side got off to a good start in the second half and gave themselves some great opportunities to increase their lead, without taking advantage of them.

Kemal Miller knocked on the door first after a corner kick, but his shot missed. Moments later, Toei and Djorgi Mihajlovic faced Callender, who had twice saved.

Inter Miami rewarded their goalkeeper in the 79th minute thanks to the cruelty of Rodriguez. After seeing his first shot saved by Pantemes, the Colombian continued the play and took advantage of a hesitant outing by the CF Montreal goalkeeper to level the score.
