Fast food chain Chipotle is turning to renewable energy

Fast-food chain Chipotle opened its first-ever electric and renewable-energy restaurant on Tuesday, but it doesn’t plan to stop there to halve its emissions by 2030.

Rooftop solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations, biodegradable utensils and bowls: The new solar and wind store format is set to be the first of about 100 stores that will open by next year, CNN Business reported Wednesday.

But that’s only a small percentage of what Chipotle plans, which aims to power 7,000 restaurants over the next few years, across North America. Currently, the fast food chain has 3,200 locations in the United States.

The company said its goal is to halve its emissions by 2030.

At the same time, American media said, the company resorted to chairs made of aloe vera and artwork made from recycled rice husks. It was also going to increase its local purchases to cut back on the transportation of food.

To date, two new restaurants have opened in Gloucester, Virginia, and Jacksonville, Florida. It should see a third of daylight already this summer in Castle Rock, Colorado.
