Bike registration: ‘It would be useless’

As cycling gains popularity, some support a return to bicycle registration, an idea strongly rejected by Vélo Québec.

Bystanders interviewed by TVA Nouvelles on Saturday seemed open to such an idea.

A passerby says: “There may be fines, and it will be like cars on the road. We share them.” We should share the costs too.

“I get the impression that registering bicycles might help reduce thefts or make it easier to track thefts,” says one woman.

But according to Magali Prepon, director of the Vélo Québec program, the cost of such a measure would be too high.

“It would be useless,” she said. It would also be very difficult to find an amount that would represent a proportionate contribution that would accommodate the need for bicycles, and would likely make the cost of running the system higher than the income that could be earned from it.

In relation to bike theft, the SPVM uses a mobile application that allows you to register your bike by uploading a photo and indicating the serial number attached to it.

If the bike is stolen, simply report it on the platform.
