A demonstration in London against the criminalization of early abortion

Thousands of demonstrators protested in central London on Saturday to demand the decriminalization of abortion after the legal time allowed, days after a Briton was sentenced to 28 months in prison.

Protesters chanted “Free Carla Forrester” and held signs saying “Abortion is a sanitary act” or “The real crime is preserving our bodies”.

The 44-year-old, already a mother of three before she became pregnant in 2019, had taken the abortion pill during childbirth in 2020, after lying about the duration of her pregnancy.

In England, Wales and Scotland, pregnant women can have an abortion up to the 24th week of pregnancy.

Opposition Labor MP Stella Creasy told protesters the case showed current legislation was “no longer relevant”. “We now have a mother of three, one of whom has special educational needs, in prison,” she said.

Clara Forster was sentenced to 28 months in prison, half of which was suspended.
